Tino Livramento faces fitness challenge ahead of World Cup

England star Tino Livramento is facing a critical race against time to prove his fitness ahead of the World Cup after sustaining his fourth injury during a disappointing campaign, reports BritPanorama.

The 23-year-old Newcastle defender picked up a thigh injury during the Magpies’ 2-1 home defeat to Bournemouth last week, which forced him to leave the pitch prematurely.

Livramento is scheduled for a second scan this weekend to determine the severity of his injury, leaving his participation in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad uncertain. Manager Eddie Howe has admitted that there is still ambiguity regarding whether the full-back will return to play before the season concludes.

Howe elaborated, “He went for a scan initially. We don’t think it’s a bad injury. We’ll wait and see whether he’ll play again this season.” He added that the upcoming medical assessment would clarify Livramento’s condition.

Though initial assessments indicate that the injury may not be severe, the timing is particularly concerning with the World Cup fast approaching. Livramento’s ability to recover in time remains unclear, putting his hopes of selection for Tuchel’s squad in jeopardy.

He has earned five caps for England and featured in both international friendlies against Uruguay and Japan last month. His versatility to operate on either flank has made him a valuable selection for the national team in the lead-up to the tournament.

However, a season marred by injuries has limited his contributions at club level, with the defender managing just 14 Premier League starts for Newcastle. Recurrent setbacks have inhibited his ability to regain the form that previously made him a crucial asset.

Despite the challenges, Howe praised Livramento’s mental resilience amid adversity, stating, “Tino’s very level-headed, very stable mentally. He’s had a frustrating season, such a good season last year.” The contrast to the previous campaign is stark, where Livramento was an integral part of the squad.

Howe noted, “He was outstanding, was fit and available and really contributed to what we delivered.” He concluded with hope for the player’s future: “An outstanding player, we just hope he has a better run of health.”

As the World Cup looms, Livramento’s situation is a poignant reminder of the unpredictability inherent in a professional athlete’s career and the thin line between opportunity and misfortune. For now, all eyes will be on the results of his upcoming scan — not just for Livramento, but for England’s tactical prospects ahead of a critical tournament.
