Shaun Murphy explains absence from BBC World Snooker Championship coverage
Shaun Murphy has clarified the reasons behind his absence from the BBC’s World Snooker Championship coverage this year, stating that contract negotiations fell through instead of any focus on tournament preparation, reports BritPanorama.
The 43-year-old revealed, “We were in negotiations with the powers-that-be and we couldn’t come to an agreement on terms.” He added, “So I decided it wasn’t for me at the previously agreed rate, it was nothing more than that.”
Murphy confirmed that the decision was solely his own and noted that he also skipped broadcasting duties during this season’s UK Championship and Masters. The two-time Triple Crown winner has faced criticism in the past for balancing commentary with competing in the same events.
“I never thought it was a conflict in the first place, to be honest,” he remarked, reflecting on daily criticisms regarding his dual role as a competitor and commentator. “I hope the other players who followed in my footsteps have received the same abuse,” he added with a touch of irony.
Despite parting ways with the broadcaster, Murphy expressed appreciation for his time in the commentary box, highlighting his admiration for presenter Hazel Irvine. “She’s a legend,” he noted, acknowledging the valuable lessons learned from her.
Murphy also paid tribute to his late colleague, John Virgo, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 79. Recalling their time together, he stated, “Great afternoons and evenings spent with JV, listening to him and watching how he went about his work.”
As the championship unfolds, Murphy’s focus is now on the table, where he is set to face Fan Zhengyi on Monday evening at the Crucible. The 25-year-old from China will be making his third appearance at the venue, albeit still in search of a victory. Having performed well during qualifying, Fan advanced with convincing scores, defeating his opponents decisively.
