Roy Keane advises Harry Kane to focus on scoring as England prepares for World Cup

Roy Keane urges Harry Kane to conserve energy for World Cup

Roy Keane has urged Harry Kane to alter his game at this summer’s World Cup, warning the England captain that conserving energy could prove crucial if the Three Lions are to end their long wait for major tournament success, reports BritPanorama.

Kane arrives at the competition in sensational form after enjoying the most prolific season of his career with Bayern Munich, where he shattered records and strengthened his growing reputation as one of the world’s elite forwards.

The 32-year-old enhanced his credentials again on Saturday night when he scored the only goal in England’s 1-0 victory over New Zealand in Tampa, continuing his remarkable international goalscoring record.

However, former Manchester United captain Keane believes the demanding conditions expected throughout the tournament mean Kane must resist the temptation to drift deep and instead focus on what he does best inside the penalty area. Over recent years, Kane has transformed his game, regularly dropping into midfield to dictate attacks, create chances and bring team-mates into play.

His passing range and vision, consequently, have become key weapons for both club and country. Yet Keane insists that England’s talisman should simplify his role when the World Cup begins.

Speaking on ITV, the Irishman argued that Kane’s experience should help him manage his workload and ensure he remains fresh during the biggest moments. “He has that experience now and maybe he has learned even more from playing for Bayern in those big Champions League matches,” Keane said.

“He has to be smart with his positioning. For the goal against New Zealand, he just drifted into the right area. It was incredible how much space he was given, but that comes from experience and understanding where to be.”

Keane delivered a clear message to England’s record goalscorer, insisting there is little value in Kane expending energy deep inside his own half. The former Republic of Ireland midfielder believes England possess enough creativity elsewhere and that Kane’s greatest contribution will come close to goal.

“He has to be sensible,” Keane continued. “We keep talking about the conditions. He doesn’t need to be coming back beyond the halfway line trying to spray passes around. There are enough players in that team who can do that and there is enough quality around him. He needs to stay up there because, at this moment in time, he is the best in the world. If England are going to win the tournament, he will be the main man.”

Kane’s importance to Thomas Tuchel’s side cannot be overstated. The Bayern Munich striker scored 61 goals across all competitions last season for his club and heads into the World Cup carrying England’s hopes of lifting a first major trophy since 1966.

While concerns remain over the impact of the extreme temperatures, Kane himself has brushed aside suggestions that the heat could become a significant obstacle. The England skipper insisted players are well prepared and believes the issue has been overstated in the build-up to the tournament.

“The drinks breaks help,” Kane said. “A lot of people are talking about the heat but I don’t think it will be as big a factor as some people are saying. Personally, and for a few of the lads who have been training in it for a while, we felt fine. We are all athletes, we are all professionals and we have played in warm-weather conditions before.”

England now have one final warm-up fixture before attention turns to their World Cup opener, with the Three Lions returning to action against Costa Rica on Wednesday night. As the tournament looms, Kane’s adaptability and focus will be key — a reminder that even the best players must adjust their approach to meet the challenges ahead.
