Rory McIlroy confirms plans to play golf for at least another nine years

Rory McIlroy has indicated that he plans to keep playing golf for at least another nine years, having won the Masters for a second time on Sunday, reports BritPanorama.

The Northern Irishman overcame challenges from Cameron Young, Scottie Scheffler, and Justin Rose to secure the green jacket and etch his name into the history books. This victory marks a significant milestone as he aims to consolidate his legacy in the sport.

At the age of 36, McIlroy already boasts six major titles—a collection he is eager to expand. He noted, in an interview with Sky Sports, that winning more prestigious events remains a primary motivator: “For me, it is the majors, it is Ryder Cups and it is the biggest tournaments in the world – that is what keeps me going and that is what is going to keep me going from 36 to when I am 45 for example.”

McIlroy expressed his aspirations straightforwardly, stating, “I have the opportunity to do them all, which is amazing. I have won two Masters and two PGA Championships and I have got a chance to win two US Opens and two Opens.” This forward-looking perspective highlights his competitive spirit and ambition in the coming years.

Having turned professional in 2007, McIlroy’s career has featured significant achievements, including his first major victory at the US Open in 2011. His triumphs also encompass two PGA Championships and The Open, although he had to wait 11 years for his next major title after winning in 2014.

His most recent significant achievement was at Augusta last year, where he overcame Rose in a tense play-off. The admiration he holds for Rose is palpable, as he reflected: “What he is doing at his age is incredible and I think everyone would love to see him get another major, because I think he deserves it. What Rose is doing is sort of the blueprint for me.”

In celebrating his latest victory, McIlroy will take a brief hiatus before focusing on the upcoming PGA Championship. His family was present to witness the win, with wife Erica Stoll, daughter Poppy, and his parents all expressing pride after his performance against the competition.

As McIlroy weighs his future in the sport, the prospect of a career spanning nearly two decades tugs at the heartstrings of fans. Golf remains as much a game of strategy as it is of skill, and McIlroy’s journey showcases the blend of athleticism and long-term ambition in this ever-evolving sport.
