Rory McIlroy has emerged as the leading taxpayer among golfers from the majors in 2026, incurring a staggering fee following his victory at the Masters, reports BritPanorama.
This year, the Northern Irishman made the cut in every major tournament, securing seventh place at the PGA Championship, 32nd in the US Open, and 40th in The Open held at Royal Birkdale.
With his performances, particularly the win at Augusta, McIlroy is reported to have earned £3,966,452 in prize money from the majors. His estimated tax bill amounts to an eye-watering £1,634,840, according to analysis.
McIlroy is not alone in facing substantial tax obligations, as he is one of six players with forecasted figures reaching millions. Wyndham Clark, the US Open champion, is projected to pay £1,630,278, while Scottie Scheffler, who did not win any of the four majors, faces an estimated tax of £1,439,988. Other notable players in this category include Sam Burns, PGA Championship winner Aaron Rai, and the Open champion, Ryan Fox.
Cameron Young, who narrowly missed out on victory at The Open, is forecast to pay £993,252 following a valiant performance, where he recorded a closing score of 64 but was edged out by Fox, who secured the championship with a final round of 68.
Reflecting on his triumph at The Open, Fox expressed his disbelief, stating, “Wow! I don’t really know what to think at the moment! I’ve got a lot of people to thank.” He noted the emotional significance of the victory, especially as he prepares to return home to his family.
