Riot police deployed after South Korea’s World Cup failure

Riot police have been ordered to airport arrivals for South Korean boss Hong Myung-bo after he was targeted with death threats following his side’s woeful performance at the World Cup, reports BritPanorama.

South Korea faced elimination from Group A after managing only a single victory, defeating the Czech Republic 2-1, but subsequently losing to Mexico and South Africa. The team’s inability to progress has drawn significant public ire, prompting major security measures upon their return.

The Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency has announced the deployment of 160 riot and airport police to ensure safety during the team’s arrival, indicating the seriousness of the threats faced. Additionally, 25 security guards will support law enforcement efforts. A police statement underscored the intent to prevent potential violence, affirming a strict response to any illegal acts.

In the aftermath, South Korea dropped seven places in the world rankings as a result of their disappointing performance. Coach Myung-Bo expressed deep regret for the lack of success, resigning with a public apology: “To all of the Korean people who love and support our national team, I would like to genuinely apologise. Today, I’d like to announce that I will step down as the national team head coach.” He took full responsibility for the team’s underachievement and pledged support for future efforts.

President Lee Jae-Myung described Myung-Bo as “incapable,” calling for a comprehensive review of the national team’s approach. He emphasized, “I sincerely apologise to the public for the deep disappointment caused by this absurd situation,” while urging for swift reforms in sports administration to prevent a repeat of such failures.

This chain of events has unveiled a discontent amongst fans and officials alike, revealing that even in sport, loyalty can sometimes triumph over capability, leading to consequences no one wants to bear.
