Nottingham Forest edge Aston Villa in Europa League semi-final first leg
Chris Wood converted a 71st-minute penalty to secure Nottingham Forest a narrow 1-0 triumph over Aston Villa in their Europa League semi-final first leg at the City Ground on Thursday evening, reports BritPanorama.
The pivotal moment occurred after VAR intervened to review Lucas Digne’s handball inside the area. While officials initially awarded a goal-kick to Aston Villa, video analysis confirmed the ball had not fully left the field of play when Omari Hutchinson attempted to play it back into the box.
Digne, responding to Hutchinson’s low cross, raised his arms as the ball neared the byline, resulting in the handball call. Following this, Wood coolly dispatched the penalty, driving the ball past goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.
With this result, Vitor Pereira’s side will bring a slender lead to Villa Park for the return fixture, where Unai Emery’s team must overcome this deficit.
Both goalkeepers were instrumental in the match. Martínez made a remarkable save in the 33rd minute, keeping out a volley from Igor Jesus, while at the other end, Stefan Ortega prevented further damage by denying attempts from Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers, and Ollie Watkins.
Wood, speaking to TNT Sports after the match, acknowledged the significance of the victory but remained cautious about the second leg: “It’s one leg of the tie. It’s nice to have the advantage but going to Villa Park will be a tough game. They’re good at their place. But we’ve done the job here at home and now hopefully we’ll build into next week.”
He added that cup matches often hinge on “small moments that can potentially change games.” Reflecting on his responsibilities as a striker, Wood stated, “That’s what I have to do and that’s what I try to do. It’s the job, the responsibility that my team gives me.”
Forest’s manager hailed his team’s character, stating after the game, “I had the privilege to be the manager of these boys. They are a fantastic group. Spirit, four managers in a season, and finishing at this level, competing at this level together and united. This is an honour for me.” Meanwhile, Villa’s bid for their first major silverware in three decades now faces a stern challenge, as the defeat marked only Emery’s second in 28 Europa League matches.
Both teams will turn their attention back to Premier League action ahead of the second leg, with Villa hosting Tottenham and Forest travelling to Chelsea next week.
