Millwall considers legal action over offensive image in council booklet

Millwall Football Club is weighing the possibility of legal action after Westminster City Council circulated an image depicting a white supremacist alongside the club’s badge, reports BritPanorama.

The illustration featured a Ku Klux Klan (KKK) figure making a Nazi salute next to a quote from Paul Canoville, the first black player to represent Chelsea, stating that “racism never went away.” This image was included in an educational booklet distributed to schools, which has since been recalled.

Millwall received a “full apology” from the council for what was described as a serious misuse of the club badge and has confirmed that no further copies will be made or distributed. Remaining materials in the council’s possession will be destroyed.

In a statement, the club expressed concern over the false and damaging image created by using their logo alongside a hate group member. Millwall is continuing to assess its legal options in response to the incident.

The council acknowledged the insensitivity of using such imagery to illustrate racism in football and has stated that they are reviewing their processes to prevent a recurrence. The Paul Canoville Foundation also commented, noting that while the message about historical racism is important, the imagery was not factually correct.

The booklet was developed without Canoville’s approval, who was referenced only as a historical example of racism experienced in football. This incident raises further questions about the portrayal of racial issues in educational contexts.

As the ripples of this incident spread, it highlights the fine line between addressing difficult historical truths and the potential for misrepresentation in contemporary discourse. In this case, the past is not simply being recalled; it’s being reinterpreted through a troubling lens.
