Matt Fitzpatrick criticises Zach Johnson’s comments on US Open venue

Matt Fitzpatrick has expressed his discontent with former Masters champion Zach Johnson regarding his remarks on the condition of the US Open host course, Shinnecock Hills, which last held the tournament in 2018, reports BritPanorama.

Johnson had drawn significant criticism for his opinion that the course had been poorly maintained, declaring, “They’ve lost the golf course.” This assessment followed contentious gameplay during the last US Open, when players faced outrageously fast greens leading to bizarre situations, including Phil Mickelson incurring a penalty for hitting a moving ball.

Since 2018, changes have been made to the course, and Fitzpatrick indicated his confusion over the previous year’s uproar, stating, “There was a big meltdown here last time… but I don’t think they lost the golf course at all.” He noted that while some areas like holes 10 and 11 present challenges, players still have opportunities to recover if they strategize effectively.

Fitzpatrick, who secured his first major title at the US Open in 2021, commented on the current conditions, observing that the greens are softer than expected due to recent rain. He contrasted this with the firmness of the greens during practice rounds in 2018, suggesting a different playing experience this time around.

One concern echoing among competitors is the 11th hole, which has drawn remarks about its difficulty under windy conditions. Fitzpatrick assessed some of these worries pragmatically, offering a potential solution regarding club selection based on wind direction.

Ahead of the competition, fellow golfer Rory McIlroy has publicly acknowledged feeling “limited” in his gameplay despite identifying some positive signs leading into the major championship. His candid reflection on technical challenges suggests a competitive field is approaching the tournament with a mix of confidence and concern as they adapt to the course’s nuances.

The evolving dynamics at Shinnecock Hills serve as a reminder of the delicate balance between tradition and the realities of modern golf, where conditions heavily influence the outcomes. With the US Open set to unfold, players will need to navigate not only a storied course but also the weight of heightened expectations and past criticisms.
