Mounting pressure on Manchester United over ticketing crackdown
Manchester United are facing mounting pressure from supporters to suspend their ticketing crackdown after fan groups claimed loyal season-ticket holders are being wrongly caught up in the club’s battle against touts, reports BritPanorama.
Thousands of supporters have recently received emails warning that their accounts have been restricted while the club investigates suspected ticket misuse, prompting fears that genuine fans could lose season tickets they have held for years.
The growing controversy has led several of United’s leading supporter organisations, including The ’58, Manchester United Supporters’ Trust (MUST), and The Red Army, to call for the process to be paused until further discussions occur.
While the groups have expressed full support for efforts to combat professional ticket touting, they argue the current system is unfairly penalising innocent supporters. In a joint statement, they said, “Professional touting, automated purchasing and those who exploit supporters for financial gain have no place at Manchester United and deserve robust action. However, that action must be fair, proportionate and transparent.”
The statement also highlighted concerns over what supporters believe to be a “ban first and ask questions later” approach. “Investigations should establish the facts before sanctions are imposed, particularly where the potential consequence is the loss of a season ticket,” it continued.
Supporter groups have endorsed a request from the club’s Fans’ Forum for United to halt any further account suspensions or season-ticket cancellations while meaningful dialogue takes place between supporters and club officials. They added, “The club and its supporters share the same objective: ensuring tickets are used fairly by genuine Manchester United supporters while protecting the integrity of the ticketing system.” They emphasized that this goal can only be achieved through trust, transparency, proportionate enforcement, better-designed systems, and meaningful engagement.
Fans have reported receiving emails asking them to explain the activity on their accounts and identify every device used to access them, after the club detected patterns it believes are consistent with ticket touting. United’s ticketing policy permits season-ticket holders to transfer tickets to approved friends or family members, yet many fans assert they have adhered to the club’s rules.
A second wave of emails was sent earlier this week, raising concerns that additional supporters might be affected by the investigation. The club has acknowledged that innocent supporters may have been inadvertently impacted and has apologised for the inconvenience caused, stating they have already reinstated some accounts.
Some fans remain anxious about their positions and fear losing season tickets they have already paid for ahead of the new campaign. According to reports, United is aware of the criticism but remains determined to tackle ticket touting, which they believe undermines the integrity of their ticketing system. Club sources maintain that supporters receiving the emails are being asked to provide information and are not automatically facing sanctions.
They also emphasized that no action will be taken until a response has been received or 14 days have passed without a reply, adding that investigations only commence when technical anomalies suggest possible touting activity. United disputes allegations that the crackdown aims to decrease the number of season-ticket holders or boost revenue, clarifying that any season tickets revoked after the appeals process would simply be reallocated to supporters on the waiting list.
As the season approaches, the balance between combating touting and ensuring that loyal fans feel secure in their longstanding relationship with the club has never seemed more critical.
