Luke Littler prioritises selectivity in tournament participation
Luke Littler, the 19-year-old darts prodigy currently leading the world rankings, has announced that he will be more selective about the tournaments he participates in moving forward, reports BritPanorama.
This year, Littler has only entered two Players Championship floor events and participated in three European Tour tournaments, opting to skip the recent World Series legs held in New Zealand and Australia entirely. His selective approach stems from his substantial £2.1 million lead in the rankings over Luke Humphries, allowing him to prioritise larger and more significant competitions.
PDC President Barry Hearn recently voiced concerns over top players regularly missing events. However, Littler remains unfazed, stating that he aims to focus on his well-being and family, seeking crucial days off when necessary. “I think obviously it’s just what’s best for me and my family,” he remarked to the Press Association.
With aspirations to dial back even further, Littler plans more time off to rest. “I’m obviously world number one, and there’s a massive gap between myself and world number two,” he observed, underscoring his comfortable position. The teenager recognises his marketability as a key draw for the sport, suggesting that darts perhaps needs him more than he needs it. He stated, “It allows me to have, obviously, days off and weeks off, and yeah, just about balancing the schedule.”
Littler’s careful management of his schedule becomes even more critical as he chases a historic clean sweep of major titles. After already winning the first six major tournaments of 2026, he aims to secure all remaining major championships, with qualification for the Players Championship Finals in Minehead this November being essential.
Despite having missed the first 26 floor tournaments of the season, Littler has returned to the competitive circuit, inevitably increasing the stakes as he prepares for the upcoming World Series of Darts Finals in Amsterdam. Success in this event could secure his path to the necessary qualification, while a setback would see him reassess his participation in the remaining tournaments.
