Mixed-race world record shadowed by doping controversy
The overall mixed-race world record of 2:09:56 belongs to Kenyan athlete Ruth Chepng’etich, who achieved the time at the 2024 Chicago Marathon, reports BritPanorama.
However, this mark has become contentious following Chepng’etich’s positive drug test five months later, which resulted in a three-year ban imposed in 2025.
In reaction to this development, London Marathon chief Hugh Brasher expressed skepticism regarding the legitimacy of the record. “I’m sorry, but I think that world record is entirely dubious; if you study everything that’s been said, from the AIU (Athletics Integrity Unit), and what they believe, that’s a personal opinion,” he stated.
Brasher’s concerns reflect a broader demand for integrity within the World Marathon Majors, particularly highlighted by the recent provisional suspension of Peres Jepchirchir, who also faced a doping violation.
As the marathon community grapples with these revelations, the implications reach beyond mere statistics, underscoring the ongoing challenge of maintaining fairness in the sport at all levels.
