Liverpool near £120 million deal for Barcola

Liverpool are closing in on a sensational £120 million agreement to sign Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain following a major breakthrough in negotiations, reports BritPanorama.

After several weeks of attempts to secure the France international, who PSG initially valued at £145 million, progress has been made. Liverpool are now expected to pay an initial £100 million, with a further £20 million potentially due in add-ons.

This proposed structure mirrors the previous agreement which brought Florian Wirtz to Anfield last year and, should it be finalised, Barcola would become the most expensive signing of the summer transfer window. The record currently belongs to Chelsea, who paid Aston Villa £117 million for Morgan Rogers.

Identified as a top attacking target months ago, Barcola’s acquisition comes after Liverpool sought a replacement for Mohamed Salah, who moved to Trabzonspor earlier this summer. The Reds previously made an unsuccessful bid for Yan Diomande, who subsequently joined Real Madrid.

Sporting director Richard Hughes and Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon have guided the negotiations with PSG, and according to The Athletic, Liverpool are now close to securing this marquee signing.

While Barcola is set to fill a key role, he may not be Liverpool’s final attacking addition this window. The club remains interested in Crystal Palace’s Ismaila Sarr and has discussed Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh. The pursuit of Sarr or Minteh could continue even with Barcola’s arrival.

Barcola, a product of Lyon’s academy, has enjoyed success at PSG, winning three Ligue 1 titles and twice lifting the Champions League. In his time with the French giants, he scored 39 goals across 152 appearances and represented France in the recent World Cup, netting a goal against England during the third-place play-off.

As Liverpool continue their high-profile spending, they will hope this recruitment drive yields better results than last summer’s, where over £450 million was invested in players including Alexander Isak, Wirtz, and Hugo Ekitike. Despite this, the team struggled to replicate the form that led them to the 2024-25 Premier League title, ultimately finishing fifth but still qualifying for the Champions League.

With the new Premier League season underway, Liverpool kicked off with a dramatic 2-2 draw against Newcastle. Manager Andoni Iraola remarked on the match, stating, “It’s a strange feeling. Not the result we wanted but the way we scored the goal in the end tastes better. Still, we would have definitely preferred the win.”

In the cutthroat world of football finance, Barcola’s anticipated arrival reinforces Liverpool’s pressing need to bridge the gap left by Salah while underlining the relentless pursuit of talent in an ever-evolving transfer market.
