Leicester City in advanced talks with Russell Martin for managerial role
Leicester City have entered advanced negotiations with Russell Martin as they seek a new manager ahead of their League One campaign next season, reports BritPanorama.
The former Rangers and Southampton boss has emerged as the club’s leading candidate to take charge following their second consecutive relegation. Martin, who has been without a club since departing Ibrox in October after just four months at the helm, has yet to accept the position but is giving serious thought to the opportunity.
The 39-year-old former Scotland international is also holding discussions with other clubs both domestically and overseas, though the challenge of restoring the 2015/16 Premier League champions to former glories appears to hold significant appeal.
The club’s owner, Aiyawatt ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha, has long been an admirer of Martin’s footballing philosophy, which closely aligns with the approach Enzo Maresca implemented during Leicester’s promotion-winning 2023/24 campaign. In a rare interview with British media in February, Srivaddhanaprabha expressed his desire to rediscover the club’s identity through a manager who shares Maresca’s vision.
“We have to get back to the identity of Leicester, what type of football we should play and what players we should bring,” he said. “I think it was so clear when we got Enzo on board, what football we should play, and the type of player we should bring in.”
Newly appointed sporting director James McCarron is also understood to view Martin’s style as a major attraction. Leicester are bracing for a substantial squad rebuild this summer, with several key players expected to depart the King Power Stadium.
Ghana international Abdul Fatawu, highly regarded centre-back Ben Nelson and Danish defender Jannik Vestergaard are all anticipated to be sold as the club prepares for third-tier football. Gary Rowett remains in the dugout on a short-term basis, though his arrangement was due to conclude at the end of last season and no announcement has been made regarding his future.
Should Martin accept the role, he would have ample preparation time with pre-season training scheduled to commence at the end of June, ahead of the League One season beginning in mid-August.
As Leicester grapples with the realities of League One, the incoming manager will face the dual challenge of revitalising team spirit while redefining the club’s footballing identity. In this transitional phase, every strategic decision will echo far beyond the pitch, as the Foxes aim to reclaim their stature in the English game.
