Erik ten Hag emerges as frontrunner for Wolves managerial role

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has emerged as a leading contender for the vacant Wolves job following Vitor Pereira’s departure from Wolverhampton Wanderers, reports BritPanorama.

Ten Hag, who was dismissed by Manchester United in October 2024, faces a challenging task as he could potentially lead his new team against his former club in early December. His tenure at United ended after delivering two domestic trophies but was marred by poor league performances, with only four wins from 14 matches.

The Portuguese manager Pereira was also relieved of his duties after a dismal start to the season, where Wolves managed to secure just two points from their opening ten matches. Following a 3-0 defeat against Fulham, the club’s management sought to make a change, despite having previously supported Pereira’s efforts to build a cohesive team.

Ten Hag has been without a club since his brief spell at Bayer Leverkusen, where his contract was terminated after just 62 days. His departure from the Bundesliga side raised questions regarding his ability to adapt from managing teams vying for trophies to one that is currently eight points adrift of safety in the Premier League.

Amid the managerial shake-up at Wolves, former manager O’Neil considered a return but withdrew following fan backlash regarding his previous departure from the club, which severely affected his reputation among supporters. While Ten Hag is currently leading the race for the role, alternative names such as Michael Carrick and Rob Edwards have also surfaced in discussions.

Despite Ten Hag’s prior criticisms for his approach and player signings at Old Trafford, the upcoming match against United at Molineux on December 8 could provide both teams with significant implications. Wolves currently sit at the bottom of the Premier League, 15 points behind United, highlighting the challenge ahead for any prospective manager stepping into this high-pressure environment.

As the football landscape evolves, the decision-making around management roles is scrutinized more keenly than ever, reminding fans that at the heart of every club’s struggles, there’s human ambition intertwined with the unforgiving nature of sport.
