John Fury defends Tommy against Jake Paul's rematch claims after Joshua fight announcement

John Fury denies Jake Paul’s claims about Tommy rejecting rematch

John Fury has hit back at Jake Paul’s accusation that Tommy Fury rejected a lucrative rematch, insisting his son is not avoiding the fight and physically cannot enter the United States, reports BritPanorama.

Paul, scheduled to face Anthony Joshua in Miami on December 19, has reignited his rivalry with Tommy, labelling him “daddy’s little boy” and claiming he turned down a $15 million offer.

The former YouTuber implied that the 26-year-old had no intention of stepping back into the ring after losing to him on points in February 2023. Tommy’s father and trainer responded forcefully, dismissing Paul’s claims and accusing the YouTuber-turned-boxer of misleading fans.

Posting a video statement on Instagram, Fury stated the supposed deal was never realistic due to Tommy’s ongoing travel restrictions. “You may have offered $15 million, but you knew full well we couldn’t get into the United States of America,” he said. He added that the Fury camp had proposed an alternative location for the fight.

“We did offer to box right next to you in Canada. You want to fight, put your $15 million in writing to our legal team. You can be in a ring within eight weeks anywhere in the world, that’s all I’m going to say to you mate, except America,” he remarked. Fury also questioned Paul’s reliability in financial agreements, referencing the aftermath of their first fight, which resulted in a split-decision victory for Tommy. “Did we or did we not bet you $3 million on national TV in front of the world media, and what did you do?” he asked.

Paul has not addressed those accusations directly but has continued to goad the Fury camp online while promoting his high-profile December fight with Joshua, which will be streamed globally on Netflix. This eight-round heavyweight contest is anticipated to mark the most significant bout of Paul’s career to date.

Tommy, who has fought only once since defeating Paul in Saudi Arabia, had previously expressed interest in a rematch, particularly given the commercial success of their first encounter. However, his inability to travel to the US has long been viewed as a barrier to staging the fight on Paul’s preferred turf.

Fury suggested that if Paul is serious about a rematch, it could take place anywhere outside American soil, but only with a genuine written contract provided by Paul. However, even if the two parties agree to terms, any potential fight is unlikely to occur in the near future, given Paul’s upcoming schedule.

Moreover, Paul’s clash with Joshua is expected to dominate his calendar for the foreseeable future, meaning a potential rematch with Tommy could be pushed to late next year at the earliest, possibly even 2027. For now, both camps continue to trade barbs, leaving fans in suspense about whether this rivalry will ever reach its anticipated second act.

With the intrigue surrounding celebrity boxing continuing to soar, one can’t help but wonder if this saga is simply too tantalising to remain unresolved for long — will their paths cross once more, or will the drama fade into the background of an ever-evolving sport?
