Joe Root leads impressive bowling performance against Pakistan
Joe Root’s second stint as England captain began convincingly, with Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue dismantling Pakistan’s batting order to bowl them out for 171 on the opening day at Headingley, reports BritPanorama.
The pair collectively took all ten wickets, with Robinson finishing with figures of five for 51 and Tongue claiming five for 46, as Pakistan was dismissed in just 48.1 overs.
Root’s return to the captaincy comes shortly after Ben Stokes’s dramatic retirement at Trent Bridge and the departure of Brendon McCullum as red-ball head coach. Root’s key decision on day one was winning the toss and opting to bowl in overcast Yorkshire conditions, a choice that paid off handsomely.
Robinson made an immediate impact, trapping left-hander Azan Awais leg before wicket with the very first delivery, marking the first time a wicket has fallen to the opening ball of a Test series in England. The Sussex seamer, recalled after two and a half years away from international cricket, settled into a rhythm early, dismissing Shan Masood for just two runs and reducing Pakistan to six for two.
The bowling display was marked by exemplary seam movement, particularly from the 32-year-old Robinson, who had missed some previous matches due to injury. A rain interruption briefly halted play, allowing Pakistan an opportunity to regroup, which they took, as Imam-ul-Haq and Abdullah Shafique established a third-wicket partnership of 91 runs. Imam batted through an ankle issue, while Shafique showed confidence at the crease, threatening to alter the course of the match.
Tongue, though initially inconsistent, struck when Imam attempted a loose shot, leading to a fine catch from Harry Brook. Following this, Robinson dismissed Shafique, who top-scored with 61 runs. Tongue then produced a swift and destructive spell, taking two quick wickets and exposing Pakistan’s fragile lower order.
The final five wickets fell for just 21 runs as England pressed their advantage, with Robinson completing his five-for before Tongue secured his own in a blistering performance. This marked Tongue’s fourth five-wicket haul in Test cricket, affirming his rising status in the longer format of the game.
England’s reply started poorly, losing both openers within ten overs. Ben Duckett fell to an lbw decision and Emilio Gay edged to slip, bringing Root to the crease. Batting at Headingley, Root steadied the innings alongside newcomer Jordan Cox, guiding the team to 112 for two by day’s end with an unbroken partnership of 64 runs. Root finished the day unbeaten on 37, with Cox on 23 not out, as England seeks a first Test series victory since December 2024. However, rain forecasts loom over the next two days, potentially impacting play.
