Jannik Sinner issues health update after French Open exit

Jannik Sinner has provided a health update following his unexpected defeat at the French Open after experiencing illness during his match against Juan Manuel Cerundolo, reports BritPanorama.

The tournament favourite lost in a five-set match, concluding with scores of 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1. Sinner appeared on track to progress after winning the third set but faltered dramatically, losing 18 consecutive points.

Reflecting on his performance, the world number one admitted, “I struggled, starting to feel very dizzy. Very low on energy. I tried to serve it out, but I didn’t have a lot of energy. I woke up this morning, didn’t feel very well and tried to keep the points very short.” He noted that fatigue set in as the match progressed: “I really couldn’t find any energy today. It was a tough spot to be in.”

Sinner described an episode during the third set when he needed to sit down on the advertising hoardings, prompting the umpire to call for medical assistance. Tim Henman, the British number one, disagreed with the umpire’s intervention, stating, “The umpire shouldn’t be getting off her chair. It’s not her responsibility, that’s the player’s responsibility. I don’t see why he should get the benefit of going into an air-conditioned room.”

After returning to the court and cooling down, Sinner ultimately could not recover, leading to the loss that significantly reshapes the tournament landscape. With Novak Djokovic as the sole remaining player among the contenders to have won a Grand Slam event previously, the men’s competition remains wide open.

Sinner’s departure follows an impressive run, having achieved a 30-match winning streak and six consecutive Masters 1000 titles since February. Despite the setback, he acknowledged, “I won three tournaments on clay. Incredible results. Amazing streak I’ve had.” Looking ahead, he will now pause his competition schedule to focus on defending his Wimbledon title.

This early exit serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities athletes face amidst demanding schedules and the physical toll of high-stakes competition, illustrating how quickly fortunes can change in the world of professional sports.
