Viewers particularly objected to reporter Gabriel Clarke’s interviews with England manager Thomas Tuchel and match-winner Jude Bellingham shortly after the final whistle.
Ofcom confirmed that many complaints centered on Clarke’s questioning. Some viewers felt the tone was overly negative, framing a key moment in the tournament in a less than celebratory light.
This backlash poses an unwelcome distraction for ITV, which has otherwise received praise for innovative coverage, including presentations from a rooftop studio overlooking Brooklyn Bridge. Tuchel, who had already shared a critical assessment of England’s performance, faced further scrutiny when questioned about the team’s mentality.
Reflecting on the match, Tuchel stated, “I’m not happy with the performance. We made life very, very difficult for ourselves,” highlighting concerns over technical mistakes and the team’s overall execution. His assessment was stark, particularly given the importance of the victory.
Clarke’s subsequent questions about mentality prompted a visibly irritated response from the manager. “It’s not a mentality problem – this is pure mentality,” Tuchel rebutted, insisting the team’s issues stemmed from performance quality rather than psychological factors.
Bellingham, who scored both goals for England, was also questioned about Tuchel’s dissatisfaction with the performance, responding tersely, “Yeah, well, whatever. Whatever.” The midfielder’s dismissive tone reflected the broader sentiment of relief mixed with frustration surrounding the match.
