ITV unveils its World Cup punditry line-up

ITV has announced its punditry team for the upcoming World Cup to be held in North America, featuring notable figures including Roy Keane, Gary Neville, and Juan Mata, reports BritPanorama.

They will be joined by Arsenal legends Patrick Vieira and Ian Wright, as well as Ange Postecoglou, the former Tottenham and Celtic manager, and Emma Hayes, the current head coach of the US women’s national team. The broadcaster will operate from a studio located by Brooklyn Bridge in New York City throughout the tournament, which kicks off on 11 June.

However, the line-up does include some significant absences. Eni Aluko, who contributed to ITV’s previous coverage during the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024, has been excluded from this team. Aluko expressed her disappointment at being overlooked for key matches, including the final between England and Spain, which Ian Wright covered. She has raised concerns about the impact of male pundits on the opportunities available for women in sports media.

Other notable commentators missing from this year’s coverage include Graeme Souness, Joe Cole, Nigel De Jong, Nadia Nadim, and Hal Robson-Kanu, all of whom participated in coverage during the Qatar tournament in 2022. Mark Pougatch, Laura Woods, and Semra Hunter are set to anchor the network’s presentations.

With Sam Matterface and Jon Champion leading the commentary, they will be joined by Seb Hutchinson and Joe Speight, with co-commentary from Lee Dixon, Ally McCoist, Andros Townsend, and Lucy Ward. Ground-level reports will be provided by Gabriel Clarke and Connie McLaughlin, while former referee Christina Unkel will serve as a referee analyst.

ITV will broadcast 29 group stage matches, sharing coverage responsibilities with the BBC, with both channels set to air the final. England’s first match is against Croatia on 17 June at 9pm BST, followed by their last group match against Panama on 27 June at 10pm. Keane expressed his excitement about returning to the US, reminiscing about past playing experiences from 1994, while Vieira identified France as the team to beat in the tournament.

ITV’s director of sport, Niall Sloane, has termed this upcoming World Cup “the biggest FIFA World Cup in history,” promising extensive coverage across ITV platforms, including ITVX and a dedicated World Cup 24/7 channel. As fans anticipate a summer of football, the stage is set for engaging discussions and insightful commentary that will no doubt add to the spectacle of this global event.
