Fabio Wardley sets sights on Oleksandr Usyk
Fabio Wardley has set his sights firmly on Oleksandr Usyk following his successful defence of the WBO heavyweight title against Daniel Dubois this Saturday, reports BritPanorama.
The Suffolk fighter, who was elevated to full champion after his knockout victory over Joseph Parker last year, seized the opportunity when Usyk chose to vacate the belt.
Wardley is eager for more than just one title, indicating ambition for broader championship aspirations. “I’ve got one belt and I’m not planning on stopping there,” he stated to Sky Sports News, emphasising that this fight is a statement of his intent.
Currently, Usyk retains the WBA, WBC, and IBF titles, all of which Wardley aims to acquire. His journey to the top is notable, beginning in white-collar boxing without any amateur experience, yet he has ascended to the status of a world champion.
Wardley’s unconventional background informs his perspective on the challenges he may present to the unbeaten Usyk. “In terms of putting people against Oleksandr Usyk, you’ve almost tried everything in terms of the unorthodox style of someone like Tyson Fury and then the well-schooled style of someone like [Anthony] Joshua or Dubois,” he explained. His aim is to “throw a curveball at him,” providing a fresh challenge.
He admits to placing significant pressure on himself. “No one puts more pressure on my shoulders than me,” he remarked, exhibiting a relentless mentality and a resolve to succeed, whether viewed as the favourite or underdog.
Dubois enters Saturday’s contest with considerable motivation, having previously faced Usyk twice. The heavy-handed puncher, remembered for his brutal stoppage of Anthony Joshua in 2024, has dismissed his past losses as learning experiences. “It’s in the past now, I feel like I’m better now,” he said, focusing on the significance of the forthcoming fight.
Dubois has described this bout as “the biggest moment of his life,” highlighting the culmination of his aspirations in the sport. The upcoming clash represents a pivotal opportunity for both fighters as they vie for recognition and expanded titles in the heavyweight division.
As the stakes rise, this encounter serves as a reminder of the relentless pursuit of greatness in boxing, where every title defence can change the course of a fighter’s career.
