Everton fan arrested for racial abuse during Manchester City match
An Everton fan has been arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence during Manchester City’s 3-3 draw at the Hill Dickenson Stadium, reports BritPanorama.
The alleged incident involved racist remarks directed towards players Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi. Semenyo was reportedly the victim during the match, while Guehi faced abuse on social media following the contest.
Manchester City condemned the actions, stating: “Manchester City strongly condemns the racist abuse directed towards Antoine Semenyo at yesterday’s match.” The club expressed disappointment over the social media attacks targeting Guehi, reaffirming their commitment to support both players and combat discrimination.
Everton confirmed the arrest, which took place after reports of racist abuse surfaced during the game. A 71-year-old man has been released on bail with restrictions preventing him from approaching any sports stadium within a one-mile radius before and after matches. The club emphasized that racism has no place in sports, stating: “A swift response from fellow supporters, stewards and Merseyside Police led to the individual being identified and appropriate action taken.”
The police highlighted the collaborative effort in addressing the incident and reaffirmed their stance against racism and discrimination in all forms. The clubs involved have pledged ongoing collaboration with authorities to ensure that such behaviour is not tolerated. Following the match, City shared that their last-minute equaliser by Jeremy Doku prevented what could have been a damaging loss.
In a league filled with intense competition, this episode serves as a poignant reminder that the spirit of football must transcend the divisive nature of bigotry, focusing on the unity that sport can foster among supporters.
