Emma Raducanu reaches Queen’s Club Championship semi-finals despite injury scare

Emma Raducanu survived an injury scare in her contest against Kamilla Rakhimova to reach the semi-finals of the Queen’s Club Championship, reports BritPanorama.

The British No 1 battled through a challenging match, displaying remarkable shot-making that could lead to an all-British final. Her progression to this stage marks her best grass-court performance at WTA Tour level, previously achieved at Nottingham two years ago.

Raducanu’s success aligns with her best showing at a WTA 500 event, having previously matched this run in Washington earlier this year. The match was not without its difficulties; play was briefly halted when aircraft flew overhead as part of the King’s birthday celebrations, causing amusement among spectators.

Trouble struck in the second set when Raducanu lost her footing while leading 3-1, which prompted a medical timeout. She returned to the court with her left thigh heavily strapped, yet faced significant pressure from Rakhimova. Despite her struggles, Raducanu managed to reassert control after removing the strapping and regained the lead within the match.

The contest had been rescheduled from Friday evening due to persistent rain, and Raducanu’s appearance in the semi-finals signifies a significant recovery from previous disappointments, including an opening-round exit at the French Open and an extended absence due to illness. Rakhimova proved to be a tough competitor, saving two match points before ultimately succumbing.

Looking ahead, Raducanu is set to face Iva Jovic later today in the semi-finals, while compatriot Katie Boulter is lined up against Donna Vekic in the other match. Boulter, reflecting on her performance after defeating Elena Rybakina, expressed her determination: “I’m standing here a winner because I trusted my game, I trusted my team. I’m so proud of today.” Her comments encapsulate the measured confidence that carries forward into this pivotal tournament.

As the tournament unfolds, all eyes will be on these rising British stars, showcasing their resilience and skill on the grass, a true test of their mettle in the run-up to Wimbledon.
