Alex Manninger dies following train accident

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Alex Manninger has died at the age of 48 after his car was struck by a train at a level crossing on the Salzburg local railway in Nussdorf am Haunsberg, reports BritPanorama.

Austrian reports confirm that the tragic incident occurred during the morning hours, leading to an outpouring of tributes from the football community.

Manninger, who earned 33 caps for Austria, played five years at Arsenal from 1997 to 2002, making 64 appearances for the club. He was pivotal in the Gunners’ success during the 1997-1998 season, contributing to the team’s achievement of the Premier League and FA Cup double.

David Seaman, his former teammate, described the news as “devastating,” recalling Manninger as a “great friend.” Seaman reflected, “He was a fantastic goalkeeper for us. When I think of Alex Manninger, he was just a young lad when he broke into the first team. For a 20-year-old to come in and play for Arsenal in the way that he did was really special.” Manninger notably helped the team with crucial performances, including a clean sheet in a key league win against Manchester United.

Seaman further emphasised Manninger’s competitive spirit, noting that his desire for excellence made him a significant player for Arsenal during his tenure. “He wanted to be the best, and if he let a goal in, he wouldn’t shut up about it,” he added.

In a display of solidarity, former Arsenal captain Tony Adams shared a picture of Manninger on social media, captioned simply, “Heartbreaking.” The club itself expressed its sorrow, stating on X, “Everyone at Arsenal is shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic passing of former goalkeeper, Alex Manninger. Rest in peace, Alex.”

Additionally, Liverpool FC also paid tribute, acknowledging his passing on their social media platform and extending condolences to his family and friends. Manninger had a brief stint with Liverpool in 2016 but did not make any competitive appearances.

Renowned Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon delivered a poignant tribute, stating, “Every word is superfluous. You chose to remain independent from the addiction of the world of football, seeking your happiness in the simple things.” Buffon acknowledged Manninger’s strong character and love for family and nature.

This tragic incident serves as a profound reminder of the fragility of life, and the football community will remember Alex Manninger not just for his athletic prowess but for the character he embodied.
