Ronaldo sent off as Portugal loses to Ireland
In a disappointing turn for Cristiano Ronaldo, the veteran forward was sent off during Portugal’s World Cup qualifying match against the Republic of Ireland on Thursday night, as his team fell to a 2-0 defeat. Ronaldo, who had previously promised to be a ‘good boy’ in anticipation of a challenging atmosphere in Dublin, finds himself at the centre of controversy following an incident that overshadowed the match, reports BritPanorama.
The match took a decisive turn when Ireland’s Troy Parrott scored twice, with Ronaldo scarcely able to influence proceedings. His night took a further downward spiral in the 61st minute when he received a red card for an elbowing incident involving Ireland’s Dara O’Shea. This marks the 14th time in his career that the 40-year-old has been dismissed.
This red card could have serious implications for Ronaldo and Portugal, as it typically entails a one-match ban; however, given the violent nature of the offence, it could mean he misses their opening game in the 2026 World Cup, should they qualify automatically.
FIFA’s disciplinary committee will ultimately decide the length of the ban. Generally, a dismissal for violent conduct can carry a suspension of up to three matches, but it is possible for Ronaldo’s penalty to be reduced, allowing him to participate right from the start of the tournament.
After the match, Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez offered his support for Ronaldo, emphasising the player’s exemplary disciplinary record with no prior red cards in 226 matches. He acknowledged that Ronaldo’s frustration had boiled over but characteristically rushed to his defence, stating, “We accept it because it is a red card. But it is for the right reasons; he cares, he was in the mood of the team and we were frustrated.”
Martinez went on to express his concerns regarding the accusations made by Ireland’s coach Heimir Hallgrimsson, who alleged that Ronaldo had tried to sway the match officials. Regardless of the controversy surrounding Ronaldo, Portugal remains focused on their upcoming matches, with their next challenge against Armenia critical for securing a spot in the summer’s European Championship.
As Portugal looks to bounce back, the focus will also be on the squad’s resilience and ability to adapt without their star player if the ban is upheld, a poignant reminder of the fine line between passion and conduct on the pitch.
