Cristiano Ronaldo faces backlash for trophy snub
Cristiano Ronaldo has been accused of “bad sportsmanship” following his decision to snub the trophy celebrations of Gamba Osaka after Al Nassr’s defeat in the AFC Champions League Two final, reports BritPanorama.
The football star participated in Al Nassr’s 1-0 loss, despite his team entering the match as the favourites to secure Asian football’s second-tier club competition, akin to Europe’s Europa League.
Ronaldo was absent as his teammates received their silver medals, drawing ire from fans who labeled his actions “disrespectful.” One supporter remarked on social media, “Shockingly bad sportsmanship,” while another added, “Ronaldo not being there is very disrespectful.”
Gamba Osaka’s Deniz Hummet scored the decisive goal against the run of play after half an hour, contributing to the remarkable upset. This latest loss for Ronaldo comes just four days after a critical own goal by Al Nassr’s goalkeeper Bento prevented the Portuguese footballer from claiming significant silverware since joining the club in January 2023. The own goal allowed title rivals Al-Hilal to salvage a 1-1 draw, leaving Al Nassr clinging to a two-point lead ahead of their last match.
If Al Nassr triumphs in their upcoming game against Damac, they will secure their 11th Saudi Pro League championship title. Coach Jorge Jesus stated, “We didn’t get what we wanted here, but there is one more final for us, the Saudi Pro League title, which is very important to us. We have five days to recover and prepare, and there is no time for grieving. We have to get going again.”
As the season progresses, Ronaldo’s son, Cristiano Ronaldo Jr, is reportedly being considered for a future role in Al Nassr’s first-team squad, highlighting a potential father-and-son reunion in football. The younger Ronaldo is progressing through the club’s academy system and may soon join his father in competitive play.
This incident serves as a reminder of the scrutiny professional athletes face and how quickly public opinion can turn, particularly for a figure as globally renowned as Ronaldo. In a sport where character and sportsmanship are as crucial as skill, moments like this can resonate far beyond the pitch. Such situations illustrate the complexity of personalities at the highest levels, where even superstars are not immune to critical appraisal from their fans.
