Cristian Romero deletes Instagram post criticizing Tottenham hierarchy after Bournemouth defeat

Cristian Romero questions Tottenham’s leadership after Bournemouth defeat

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero launched a scathing attack on the club’s hierarchy through Instagram following their defeat at Bournemouth, accusing unnamed figures of spreading “lies” before later removing the inflammatory reference from his post, reports BritPanorama.

The 27-year-old Argentine took to social media after Spurs fell 3-2 to the Cherries, expressing frustration at those within the club who he claims only make themselves visible during successful periods. Romero’s original message, shared with his 5.1 million followers, condemned individuals who “only show up when things are going well, to tell a few lies,” a sentiment he later deleted.

In his Instagram statement, Romero apologised to fans who travel to support the team, stating: “Apologies to all fans of you who follow us everywhere, who are always there and will continue to be.” He acknowledged the players’ culpability, asserting: “We are responsible, there’s no doubt about that. I am the first.”

He pledged that the squad would continue working to improve, adding that they would “keep facing up to it and trying to turn the situation around, for ourselves and for the club.” Romero’s pointed remarks indicated that he believes those in leadership roles should communicate with supporters during difficult spells, which he feels has not occurred for years.

Romero’s frustrations appeared to resonate with his teammates, as Spanish full-back Pedro Porro offered support in the comments, responding: “Amen. Keep going brother. We have a lot of battles left.” Brazilian forward Richarlison also signalled agreement by posting a praying hands emoji beneath the message.

The solidarity expressed by Porro and Richarlison suggests Romero’s sentiments may be shared more widely within the squad, who remain united amid the mounting pressure of a disappointing campaign. This campaign has seen the north London club slip to 14th in the Premier League standings, following an eighth league defeat on Wednesday, when Bournemouth secured a dramatic 95th-minute winner from Antoine Semenyo.

The defeat intensified tensions between players and travelling supporters, with defender Micky van de Ven appearing to confront a fan directly. Both Palhinha and Porro were reportedly restrained as emotions ran high in the away end. Adding to the controversy, manager Frank has faced scrutiny after being photographed drinking from an Arsenal-branded cup, although he has downplayed the incident as a mistake.

This situation highlights not only the struggles on the pitch but the fractures that can emerge between a club’s players and its leadership during turbulent times. In a landscape where communication is vital, Romero’s frustration might serve as an uncomfortable reminder of how essential transparency is to maintain unity amidst adversity.
