Carlos Alcaraz announces split from coach Juan Carlos Ferrero
Carlos Alcaraz has addressed his surprising separation from long-time coach Juan Carlos Ferrero, maintaining that the decision to part ways was reached jointly by both parties, reports BritPanorama.
The Spanish tennis star, who has rapidly ascended from a promising teenager to the world’s top-ranked player, accumulated six Grand Slam titles during his partnership with Ferrero. This coaching relationship, which began seven years ago, concluded just prior to the commencement of the Australian Open.
In speaking about the end of their collaboration, Alcaraz affirmed the split was amicable. “With Juan Carlos, we decide to do it,” he explained. “It is something we just decided. I think chapter of life, that is a time that has to be end.”
Despite this significant change, the 22-year-old remains positive, stating, “I got to say that I’m really grateful for this seven years I’ve been with Juan Carlos. I learned a lot. Probably thanks to him I’m the player that I am right now.” Alcaraz confirmed that he and Ferrero have maintained a good relationship post-separation.
Alcaraz’s current coaching setup will include Samuel Lopez, who remains part of his team. He expressed confidence that his preparation for the new season will proceed without disruption. “We didn’t change the routine at all. We just going through the pre-season and the season in the same way, probably with the improvement that I really want to do,” he said.
As he gears up for the Australian Open, Alcaraz has fixed his sights on claiming the title, viewing it as his primary objective for the year. Victory in Melbourne would mark a significant achievement, allowing him to complete the career Grand Slam, having previously not advanced beyond the quarter-finals at this tournament.
Should he triumph, Alcaraz would surpass Rafael Nadal’s record to become the youngest player ever to hold all four Grand Slam titles. “Obviously [to] complete the career Grand Slam is something amazing to do, be able to be the youngest that have done it before, you know, is even better,” he noted.
With the weight of history on his shoulders, Alcaraz’s journey at the Australian Open will certainly be one to watch, illustrating just how swiftly fortunes can change in the realm of professional tennis.
