Ben Stokes reveals facial injuries after cricket training incident

England captain Ben Stokes has revealed significant facial injuries sustained after being struck by a cricket ball during a training session at Durham’s nets, reports BritPanorama.

The 34-year-old posted a selfie on social media earlier today, displaying the extent of his wounds, which included a badly swollen right eye, a gash to his cheek, and a bloodied nose. The incident occurred while Stokes was positioned to one side as teammates practised, rather than in the crease.

Stokes has recently returned to England following the national team’s disappointing Ashes campaign in Australia. Despite the painful appearance of his injuries, he maintained his characteristic sense of humour, joking in a social media post: “You should see the state of the cricket ball,” accompanied by a laughing emoji.

This light-hearted response has drawn an outpouring of support from cricket enthusiasts online, with fans flooding social media with messages of goodwill wishing the all-rounder a speedy recovery. One supporter posted, “Wishing Ben for a speedy recovery. Get well soon, Stokes,” while another added, “Get well soon, legend!”

There has yet to be any indication as to whether the facial damage will affect Stokes’ upcoming commitments. He is currently recovering from a groin injury sustained during the final Test of England’s 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia and was unable to play in the final Tests of last summer due to a shoulder injury.

Stokes, who has torn his hamstring twice over the past year, has confirmed his intention to continue as England captain at least until the end of the 2027 home Ashes series, despite criticism from some supporters following the recent series. He is also set to join the backroom staff for the Lions’ white-ball tour of the UAE, signalling a move closer to a post-playing career in coaching.

As the Ashes series approaches, the focus remains not just on recovery but also on how Stokes will navigate the demands of leadership amid increasing scrutiny. This blend of resilience and vulnerability is a reminder of the challenges athletes face, both on and off the field, as they balance personal health with national expectations.
