Audi makes Formula 1 debut with R26 shakedown

Audi has etched its name into Formula 1 history by becoming the inaugural constructor to put a 2026-specification machine through its paces on circuit, reports BritPanorama.

The German manufacturer’s R26 challenger completed its maiden shakedown at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Friday, ahead of its highly anticipated debut campaign amidst significant technical regulation changes.

Footage captured from within the venue revealed the car in an unpainted black finish, bearing only the iconic Four Rings emblem on its rear wing. Both Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto took turns at the wheel, with each driver covering approximately 100 kilometres, adhering to promotional event regulations that limit teams to a maximum of 200 kilometres.

During the session, the R26 ran on Pirelli demonstration rubber rather than the compounds typically used during official testing and race weekends. Reports indicate that Hulkenberg handled the initial stints without incident, providing reassurances following extensive bench testing prior to its track debut.

Audi’s entry into Formula 1 follows its complete acquisition of the Sauber operation in 2024, transforming the Swiss-based outfit into a works team under Jonathan Wheatley’s leadership. The power unit that propelled the R26 was successfully fired up on 19 December, marking a crucial preparation step.

The 2026 campaign is set to feature a dramatic technical overhaul, with new regulations introducing active aerodynamic elements and an increased emphasis on electrical propulsion, thereby presenting novel challenges for all competitors.

Audi will formally unveil the R26 at a launch event in Berlin on 20 January, providing the first official glimpse of the car intended to lead its charge in this new era. The team is also scheduled to return to Barcelona for five days of private pre-season testing starting on 26 January.

In the spirit of racing, Audi is not alone in seeking early track time, with Ferrari and Williams reportedly planning to utilise filming days prior to the testing programme. As new contenders prepare to mark their territory on the grid, the anticipation surrounding the upcoming season continues to grow.

With each turn of the wheel, Audi’s entry in Formula 1 is not just an introduction, but a reminder of the relentless drive for innovation—where every lap reveals the sport’s inherent unpredictability and excitement.
