South Korea threatens to escalate row with Ukraine over POWs

South Korea has vowed to escalate its dispute with Ukraine over the announcement of two North Korean prisoners of war (POWs) being transferred to Seoul, asserting that the country’s “dignity” is at stake, reports BritPanorama.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed at the UN General Assembly last week that the prisoners had been sent to South Korea, which angered Seoul, as it had expected the transfer to remain secret. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung stated that his country would take “further action” if Kyiv does not acknowledge a confidentiality agreement related to the POWs.

The announcement has been labeled by Ukrainian officials as a “diplomatic misunderstanding.” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha noted that efforts are underway to mend relations, expressing hope for a quick resolution. “South Korea is an important country for us,” he emphasized, underlining the bilateral relationship.

Ukraine captured the two North Koreans in January 2025, marking the first time Pyongyang’s troops were taken alive since North Korea began assisting Russia’s military operations in Ukraine. The incident highlights the growing complexities of international relations in the context of the ongoing conflict.

Amidst the tension, Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated that Russia would respond decisively to any attack from Europe, asserting that Moscow is not planning to initiate conflict but would utilize “all weapons at their disposal” if necessary. This statement reflects Russia’s long-standing narrative regarding its military posture in Europe, framing it as defensive while simultaneously escalating threats.

The situation remains fluid, with both Ukraine and South Korea navigating the implications of their respective stances. Observers are likely to watch closely for further developments, particularly as they pertain to international diplomacy and regional stability.

The ongoing exchanges signal the need for clarity and dialogue in managing international relations, particularly in a landscape as intricate as the current geopolitical climate.
