At least five dead as Putin launches ‘massive attack’ on Kyiv
Explosions rocked Kyiv as Russian forces launched a significant missile assault on the city, resulting in at least 15 fatalities, with additional casualties reported in the wider Kyiv region. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed approximately 40 people injured during these attacks, which have exacerbated an ongoing conflict that has persisted for over four years, reports BritPanorama.
While air raid warnings reverberated through the capital, the air force indicated that strikes occurred across 28 locations throughout Ukraine. Zelensky underscored the urgency for enhanced air defence support, appealing to allies for the provision of Patriot missiles, particularly as international stockpiles diminish amid concurrent global conflicts.
In his statement, Zelensky expressed a sense of urgency, stating, “We need missiles for Patriots, and only our partners can provide them.” He reaffirmed Ukraine’s preparedness to procure the required weaponry, emphasising the need for rapid decision-making from the United States and allied nations.
As the attack unfolded, Ukraine’s intelligence agency disclosed that Russia is capable of producing over 200 cruise and ballistic missiles monthly, holding a substantial stockpile of both types of munitions. Reports indicate that over 1,100 cruise missiles and approximately 130 Iskander-M ballistic missiles are currently in Russian possession, further complicating the regional military dynamics.
The drone threat has extended beyond Ukraine’s borders, with Romania recently scrambling F-16 jets to intercept a suspected Russian marine drone approaching a Black Sea gas project. The acting Romanian Defence Minister Radu Miruta confirmed that the drone, which was destroyed en route to Neptun Deep, was equipped with explosives intended to threaten critical infrastructure.
Romania’s actions reflect heightened security measures in response to drone incursions, as neighbouring countries bolster defences amidst fears of escalation. Polish armed forces have activated military aviation operations and ground-based air defence systems, while Spain has deployed F-18 jets to monitor potential threats near its borders.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha remarked on Russia’s audacity, stating, “Russia is increasingly testing the resolve of NATO and its partners,” highlighting the deliberate risks posed by its actions beyond Ukraine’s borders.
As the situation escalates, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen noted a comprehensive threat to the European Union, describing Russia’s ongoing campaign of intimidation as a tactic aimed at undermining unity among member states.
