Labour minister reveals death threats amid calls for political culture change

A Labour minister has revealed he has received several death threats this year alone as he called for a less toxic political culture in the wake of Ann Widdecombe’s murder, reports BritPanorama.

Sir Chris Bryant highlighted the alarming trend, especially given the recent violence against politicians, most notably the murders of Jo Cox and Sir David Amess over the past decade. Speaking on The Camilla Tominey Show on GB News, he expressed concern about the current state of political discourse in the UK.

“We should be worried about the state of the British political debate,” Sir Chris stated. He disclosed, “I can’t tell you how many death threats I’ve had over the years, including several this year, including from one guy who’d only just been let out of prison.”

The Labour MP noted the implications of such threats not only for himself but also for his constituency office staff, suggesting that they may face greater risks. He commended Parliament and the government for taking these threats more seriously in recent years and praised the support provided by law enforcement to MPs.

In parallel developments, Devon and Cornwall Police reported they remain “open-minded” regarding the possible motives behind Ms. Widdecombe’s killing, indicating no evidence has been found to link the death to terrorism or political motivations. Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman confirmed that detectives had arrested a 28-year-old man in Rotherham but are not seeking further suspects.

“At this point there is still no information to suggest that this is a terrorism-related incident,” Longman said, while underscoring the need for an open inquiry into the motives involved.

Additionally, Zia Yusuf, a senior Reform figure, criticized the government and the House of Commons Speaker for allegedly ignoring the security concerns of his party’s MPs. He mentioned that following Ms. Widdecombe’s death, Reform UK MPs are now receiving round-the-clock security protection funded by the party.

In a statement posted on X, formerly Twitter, Mr. Yusuf contended, “Based on what I have seen in the last 48 hours, none of the government, the Speaker nor the police care at all about the security of Reform MPs. Several of our MPs have written to the above in recent months about distressing, escalating security concerns, asking for help. Their correspondence was not even replied to. I will let you draw your own conclusions from this.”

The intertwining of political discourse and safety remains a pressing issue in Britain, highlighting the urgent need for ongoing discussions about security measures for public representatives in a volatile climate.
