Sir Keir Starmer’s final appearance at PMQs
Sir Keir Starmer received a warm farewell as he made his final appearance at the despatch box during Prime Minister’s Questions, reports BritPanorama.
The Speaker opened the session with emotional tributes, highlighting Starmer’s “steadfast support for Ukraine.” As he engaged with MPs, the Prime Minister took pride in defending his record and assessing his achievements during his tenure, often looking to the gallery to thank families that inspired his work.
He detailed key accomplishments, referring to progress in the UK economy, enhancements to the NHS, and investments aimed at reducing child poverty. Internationally, Starmer asserted that his administration had “transformed our international standing in the world” through a renewed relationship with the EU and leadership in various global coalitions.
Amid the session, he acknowledged England’s upcoming World Cup semi-final against Argentina, jokingly stating he didn’t care about the score as long as they secured a victory. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch tempered her usual political sharpness, choosing to convey her appreciation for Starmer’s contributions during his final PMQs.
Badenoch expressed gratitude towards the sacrifices made by Starmer’s family, remarking on their importance and the support they provided throughout his time in office. “Our families make a huge sacrifice for our choice to enter public life,” she stated.
In response, Starmer thanked Badenoch for her personal support during challenging moments, including a near-fatal incident at his family home and the loss of his brother. “She reached out to me,” he remarked, acknowledging both her gesture and her tribute to his family.
The House paid further respect to former Tory minister Ann Widdecombe, with Starmer expressing his horror at her recent murder and suggesting a permanent tribute be established in her honour.
