French warship fires shots near UK official in the Channel

A French warship fired “intimidation” shots near Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp in the Channel this morning, reports BritPanorama.

Philp was out at sea monitoring small boat migrant crossings when the gunboat fired a total of 17 live rounds. During this incident, he was in the midst of filming a broadcast interview.

Mr. Philp stated, “On the Channel today monitoring illegal migrant crossings. As I was being interviewed by the BBC just now a French warship approached close and fired 17 live rounds behind us. There was no notice or training exercise in place. Felt like warning shots or attempted intimidation.”

The French warship reportedly operated close to Philp’s fishing boat within the international shipping lane, a location pivotal for migratory crossings. Thus far, the French Navy, responsible for patrolling the Channel, has not responded to the allegations made by Philp.

The recent warmer weather has led to a significant increase in small boat crossings, with over 900 migrants making the perilous journey last week alone. The French Navy typically escorts overcrowded dinghies from the coastline into British waters, where they are subsequently intercepted by Border Force personnel.

Philp’s claims have the potential to ignite a fresh diplomatic incident with France, a nation with which the UK has experienced ongoing tensions regarding migration issues in the Channel.

Britain has committed nearly £1 billion to France to assist in curbing illegal migration. Recent Home Office statistics reveal that 881 individuals arrived in Dover since crossings resumed on Wednesday, with one particularly large dinghy carrying 165 migrants, breaking the previous record of 128 on a single vessel.

The Home Office commented on the situation, stating, “We are bearing down on small boat crossings, with removals at record levels and asylum claims down by 12 per cent. We have removed or deported almost 70,000 people who were here illegally — an increase of 41 per cent.”

This incident underlines the complexities of UK-France relations amid ongoing discussions on managing migration across the Channel.
