Councillor suspended days after election
A councillor who claimed to be a “serial dad” has been suspended just days after his election. Tory Nick Baneswell, 57, gained attention after appearing on a Channel 4 show “Inside the World of Serial Dads” in 2018, where he revealed he had fathered ten children with five different women, reports BritPanorama.
Footage of Baneswell was shared online following his election to Newport City Council, Gwent, on May 7, where he won the Rogerstone North seat. Since then, he has been suspended from the Conservative Party, although he claims no reason has been provided for the action.
In a statement, Baneswell noted, “Myself and the Conservative Party in Newport do not know why. At the moment we are in the dark and have sent off emails.”
During his appearance on the documentary, he used the name Nick Portman and made statements suggesting he had “never carried a condom.” At the time, he was involved with a woman 27 years his junior, with whom he shared a ten-month-old child. Sources indicate that their relationship may have ended after she discovered he was communicating with other women.
The Welsh Conservative Party has confirmed Baneswell’s suspension, stating, “Nick has been suspended from the Conservative Party pending an investigation.”
This incident underscores the complexities of personal conduct and public office, raising questions about accountability and the standards expected from elected officials.
