Christopher Nolan’s strict on-set rules for The Odyssey
The highly anticipated film The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan and featuring a roster of stars including Zendaya, Tom Holland, Charlize Theron, and Robert Pattinson, has generated significant buzz, with expectations of it being one of the year’s major cinematic events, reports BritPanorama.
Filming took place across parts of Italy, Greece, and Iceland, embodying the scale and ambition associated with Nolan’s projects. With a budget reaching $250 million, it’s not surprising that the director imposed strict rules on set.
These regulations became widely known after a segment featuring Anne Hathaway and Matt Damon on Brittany Broski’s Royal Court. During the interview, Hathaway revealed a particular ban on wearing Uggs, which Nolan deemed unacceptable for maintaining the film’s atmosphere.
“Thou shalt not wear Uggs,” Hathaway confirmed, to which Damon added, “That’s a good one — he hates Uggs… I think they just symbolize leisure in a way that he’s not comfortable with.” Such guidelines reflect Nolan’s intention to immerse actors completely in their roles, free from everyday distractions.
In a subsequent appearance on CBS Mornings, Nolan elaborated on his rationale, explaining that even minor comforts could disrupt the fictive reality he seeks to create on set. “There are certain things that just remind you you’re in the ‘real world’ as opposed to the world we’re trying to create for the actors. You want to stay in the moment,” he stated.
The Odyssey marks a significant production achievement, with the cast’s family members also playing roles behind the scenes. The film was shot in six countries and utilized over 2 million feet of IMAX 70mm film. Its complexity is reflected in its impressive opening week, generating $282 million at the box office.
The Odyssey is currently screening in cinemas.
