Calls for review of MPs’ security following Ann Widdecombe’s murder

Andy Burnham has called for a “serious review” of MPs’ security after the murder of veteran politician Ann Widdecombe, reports BritPanorama.

The incoming prime minister warned that “something has changed” in politics, asserting he is “certainly” prepared to reassess the security measures for politicians upon entering Downing Street.

Counter-terrorism police are now investigating whether the suspect arrested for Ms Widdecombe’s killing was motivated by left-wing extremism and had plans for further acts of violence against other high-profile figures.

Detectives confirmed that Miss Widdecombe’s death was a “targeted attack” and that investigating the suspect’s potential targeting of Reform UK figures remains an open line of inquiry.

The 78-year-old former MP and MEP was discovered dead at her home in Haytor on Dartmoor, Devon, on Thursday.

A 28-year-old white British man, arrested in South Yorkshire on Saturday, is currently in custody, facing charges related to terrorism and murder.

Reflecting on the incident, Mr Burnham stated, “It’s obviously appalling what happened to Ann. I knew Ann over many years in the House, and we would get along – and everybody would get along.”

He continued, “But it feels as though something has changed. It’s easy to blame social media, but it feels like it’s having some impact in just building that kind of toxicity that surrounds political debate.”

Mr Burnham emphasized that the situation cannot be addressed with “easy, glib answers,” stressing the need for a thorough review of MPs’ security, stating, “I certainly am prepared to do that.”

Senior figures in Reform UK have raised concerns regarding the security measures provided for the party and its leader, Nigel Farage, especially in light of recent events.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has offered Mr Farage a meeting with the chairman of the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec), responsible for the security of high-profile individuals.

Reform’s Treasury spokesman Robert Jenrick criticized the recent downgrade of Mr Farage’s state-funded security, expressing disbelief at the situation: “I can’t see any good explanation for that, and the events of the last week have only shone a light on that.”

The i Paper reported that Mr Farage turned down an offered security package similar to that provided for the Leader of the Opposition, Kemi Badenoch, as he deemed it a downgrade.

Treasury Chief Secretary Lucy Rigby warned that politicians now face a “horrific” culture of violence that has intensified in recent years.

She noted the increasing threats to MPs and others in public life, influenced heavily by social media, stating, “This is key to living in a democracy.”

Ms Rigby confirmed that MPs are being offered increased security, highlighting the troubling reality that many potential candidates are deterred from public life due to fears of violence.

Counter-terrorism police are now overseeing the investigation into Ms Widdecombe’s murder after new evidence emerged; however, it was stressed that both murder and terrorism inquiries are being conducted in parallel.

Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor remarked that the nature of the attack indicates it was indeed targeted and that understanding the extent of any planning remains critical to the investigation.

With the ongoing inquiry, the threat level to other politicians is under scrutiny, raising questions about the overall safety of figures within public life.

As investigations continue into both the motive and the planning behind this tragic event, questions linger regarding the broader implications for political safety and security in the UK.
