Betfred ends sponsorship of British Classics
Betfred has announced it will not renew its sponsorship of the British Classics, citing the cumulative impact of recent tax increases as a decisive factor, reports BritPanorama.
A spokesman for Betfred stated, “Following successive tax rises for the betting industry, and in particular the increase to machine games duty at the most recent Budget, it is with great sadness that we have taken the difficult decision not to proceed with a three-year renewal of our sponsorship of the British Classics.”
This decision comes after a period of rising costs attributed to government policies, leaving the bookmaker with little choice. The loss of sponsorship will affect key races, including the Derby and the Guineas Festival at Newmarket, raising concerns about the financial implications for these prestigious events.
Amy Starkey, managing director of the Jockey Club’s London Hub, expressed disappointment at the news but acknowledged Betfred’s reasons. “While we are naturally disappointed that Betfred have taken the decision not to renew their sponsorship… we understand their reasons for doing so and know this was not an easy decision for them,” she said.
Starkey added, “Fred Done and his team are hugely passionate supporters of racing and have been great partners for our four British Classics, and we look forward to hopefully working with them again at some point in the future.”
The withdrawal of such significant sponsorship raises broader questions about the future financial landscape of British horse racing, an industry already navigating various challenges in recent years. As funding models change, the sport may find itself at a pivotal moment, charged with rethinking how it attracts and retains sponsorship in an increasingly competitive environment.
