Nearly 1,000 migrants have crossed the Channel to the UK in two days after a three-week pause in arrivals, reports BritPanorama.
Some 671 people in nine boats made the journey to Britain on Friday, as footage captured a man wielding a knife while threatening migrants before boarding a dinghy.
This influx follows 263 individuals arriving in three boats on Thursday, marking the end of a 21-day hiatus, the longest without arrivals this year due to adverse weather conditions in the Channel.
Several children were among a large group of migrants seen wearing life jackets as they were brought ashore in Dover, Kent, as better weather conditions improved crossing safety.
In footage recorded by the Press Association on Friday, a man could be seen approaching a boat while holding a knife in waist-deep water, prompting another man aboard the vessel to attempt to thwart him with a boot. It appeared the knife was dropped into the sea as the man boarded the boat destined for the UK.
A shout of “I will kill you” was heard as French rescue boats hovered nearby. With just over two months left in the year, and given that crossings typically decline in late autumn and winter, projections suggest the total number of crossings in 2026 is unlikely to exceed that of 2025.
As of Friday, Home Office figures indicated a total of 21,869 arrivals for 2026. This number reflects a significant change in crossing patterns.
The Government has stated that crossings are down considerably, with this year’s summer arrivals being the lowest recorded since 2020.
In response to the latest statistics, Conservative officials claimed the numbers demonstrate that Labour has “lost control of our borders.” Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp commented: “The boats keep coming, the smugglers keep operating and Labour keeps making excuses.”
Philp elaborated that Labour’s approach to border control was insufficient, criticizing Andy Burnham for purportedly prioritizing the appeasement of left-wing backbenchers over implementing necessary actions to secure borders and deport illegal immigrants. “Only the Conservatives have the backbone to deliver a borders plan including leaving the ECHR and deporting all illegal immigrants. That is how we end the crisis in the Channel,” he asserted.
The situation continues to evolve, reflecting broader debates around migration and border policy in the UK.
