CAF reinstates AFCON every two years
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the reinstatement of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to a biennial format, responding to concerns regarding potential delays in the introduction of a proposed Nations League, reports BritPanorama.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe stated that the executive committee’s decision is intended to advance, protect, and promote the interests of African football, emphasizing the significance of this format for the 54 member associations and African players in international clubs.
Motsepe elaborated that the proposed pan-African league, designed to replicate the existing AFCON format, would necessitate several years of development before it could deliver substantial financial returns for African competitions, essential for their sustainability and competitiveness on a global scale.
Looking ahead, the next AFCON will take place in East Africa in 2027, with joint hosting responsibilities shared among Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, marking a noteworthy chapter in the continent’s football calendar.
This move reflects a strategic decision to navigate the complexities of football development in Africa, striking a balance between ambition and capability. With this commitment to a biennial AFCON, African football is poised to flourish, fostering local talent and enhancing its global standing.
