Controversy surrounds mixed-race world record

The mixed-race world record of 2:09:56, set by Kenyan athlete Ruth Chepng’etich at the 2024 Chicago Marathon, is under scrutiny following her positive drug test and subsequent three-year ban announced in 2025, reports BritPanorama.

This situation has raised questions about the integrity of marathon records, particularly as Chepng’etich’s record was celebrated only months before the revelations emerged. Her ban has sparked a broader discussion within the athletics community regarding performance-enhancing drugs.

London Marathon chief Hugh Brasher voiced concerns about the implications of such controversies on the reputation of long-distance running. “I’m sorry, but I think that world record is entirely dubious; if you study everything that’s been said, from the AIU (Athletics Integrity Unit), and what they believe, that’s a personal opinion,” Brasher remarked.

His comments reflect growing apprehension over athletes’ conduct within the sport, particularly after the provisional suspension of Peres Jepchirchir for a similar doping violation. This string of events has intensified calls for enhanced governance and monitoring across the World Marathon Majors to uphold the competition’s integrity.

The world of competitive athletics often feels precarious, a battleground where extraordinary feats are sometimes overshadowed by scandal. In an era that demands both excellence and adherence to ethical standards, the path forward for marathon runners now seems strewn with doubt, raising pivotal questions about the future of the sport.
