Jamie T laments inability to tour Europe post-Brexit due to rising costs

Jamie T reflects on career ahead of new album release

In the early hours of 30 June 2023, Jamie T was hours away from playing the biggest gig of his career, a hometown headline celebration at North London’s Finsbury Park, reports BritPanorama.

The musician, who has battled panic disorder for much of his life, tackled the pressure of the impending performance through songwriting. He was inspired by a sample of “Tallahassee” by Canadian folk singer Leif Vollebekk, which he had considered incorporating for some time.

“I’d been thinking about sampling that song for a good year,” said Treays. As he grappled with self-doubt about his worthiness for the major gig, he received an epiphany: “a lyric comes to me like a bolt of lightning: ‘I’m Paul Heaton, because the only thing you’ll ever hear round here is magic’.”

The line serves as an homage to Heaton while showcasing Treays’ unique wordplay. “As soon as I come up with that, I’m like, yes, can’t wait to finish this,” he added. His new album, titled Ghosts (100 Days of Morning), features this track, which he released as the second single last month.

Treays acknowledged the struggles of managing a music career while living with anxiety, describing how he often sought comfort in pre-gig rituals and the difficulty of performing in an industry he joined at such a young age. “The panic disorder was no joke. I would have to go to the pub for an hour and a half before I did something to get the Dutch courage up,” he shared. Despite these challenges, he finds great joy in making music.

Now approaching 40, he reflects on his two-decade journey since the release of his debut single “Sheila” when he was barely out of his teens. This spans to his latest work, which he hopes can encapsulate his growth and experiences while closing a chapter on earlier periods of his life.

The album opener, “3310,” juxtaposes nostalgic references with contemporary sounds, illustrating Treays’ musical evolution. He explained its inspiration, originally stemming from a more personal tale, before evolving into a broader reflection of loyalty and support.

His connections in the music industry remain strong; longtime collaborator and friend Hugo White co-produced the album, while new associates like Fred Again have integrated his work into their projects, highlighting the synergistic nature of contemporary music.

Despite the successes, Treays faces the pressing challenges of touring, especially with Brexit impacting his ability to perform in Europe. “I can’t tour Europe anymore. I don’t think we’ve been back there since Brexit,” he lamented, emphasizing the logistical hurdles created by recent changes.

For Jamie T, these challenges coalesce with his ongoing passion for creation. He stated, “I mostly enjoy writing records these days. That’s where I feel happiest.” As he triumphed over self-doubt and navigated the complexities of his career, he embraces his longevity in a rapidly changing industry.

Ghosts (100 Days of Morning) (Polydor) is released on 9 October 2025
