Ukrainian drones targeted several locations in the Moscow region overnight, involving an estimated 650 aircraft in what is considered the most significant aerial assault on the area in two years, resulting in at least one fatality, reports BritPanorama.
One of the key sites impacted was the Volodarsk Linear Production and Dispatch Center, where a fire was reported near the village of Konstantinovo. This attack follows Ukraine’s strategic efforts to diminish Russian oil dependency by claiming to have neutralised over half of Russia’s oil refining capacity.
Recent strikes aimed at Russian refining capabilities have targeted facilities in Moscow, Yaroslavl, and other cities, which Ukraine asserts are vital to funding Russia’s ongoing military operations. Moreover, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed a willingness to halt strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, conditional upon Moscow ceasing its aggression in Ukraine.
The Moscow mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, stated that Russian air defenses managed to intercept 105 drones during the assault, although the timing and placement of any damages have yet to be fully detailed by Ukrainian officials. The ongoing hostilities highlight the intensified military campaigns from both sides, as overall progress along the extensive front lines remains largely stalled.
This recent escalation of drone warfare underscores the strategic focus on crippling an opponent’s economic resources amidst the protracted conflict, continuing to shape the trajectory of the ongoing war.
