Burnham urged to disclose all meetings with Manchester City owners amid financial misconduct allegations

Calls for transparency on Burnham’s meetings with Manchester City owners

Andy Burnham should publish all details of his meetings with Manchester City’s owners, the Abu Dhabi United Group (ADUG), and declare all hospitality he has accepted at the Etihad Stadium, the Liberal Democrats have said, reports BritPanorama.

The prime minister faced criticism this week for expressing concern about the potential sale of Manchester City after the club was found to have breached the Premier League’s financial rules by an independent commission. Burnham credited the owners with being “a huge partner in the building of modern Manchester.”

Downing Street issued two clarifications of the prime minister’s position on Thursday, with a spokesperson insisting that the guilty verdict against Manchester City is indeed “serious.”

Burnham’s comments prompted backlash on social media, with shadow sports minister Louie French urging the government to “keep politics out of football,” especially as the case is set to proceed to an appeal board and a sanctions hearing.

The Liberal Democrats have drafted a letter to the prime minister, describing his defense of City as “extraordinary.” In the letter, seen by the Guardian, the party’s spokesperson for culture, media and sport, Anna Sabine, stated that an independent commission had found Manchester City guilty of 114 charges of breaching financial rules over nearly a decade, which included the use of “sham contracts” to disguise over £830 million of funding.

Sabine criticized the prime minister for thanking the club’s owners and downplaying the findings as “contested,” calling it extraordinary for a prime minister to question the results of an independent investigation and potentially undermine trust in the Premier League’s processes.

She emphasized that football fans expect their leaders to uphold the rules, especially in light of ongoing issues regarding integrity in the sport, particularly following controversies surrounding Fifa’s conduct during the World Cup.

Additionally, Sabine highlighted the need for scrutiny of the prime minister’s ties to ADUG, indicating plans to request details of meetings with Downing Street and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA).

“Football fans up and down the country deserve to know that the rules apply to everyone, however rich and powerful they are,” she remarked, suggesting that the prime minister’s quick defense of the owners raises questions about their relationship.

The Liberal Democrats are pushing for Burnham to disclose every meeting and conversation he has had with City Football Group, ADUG, or UAE government representatives since his tenure as mayor, including any hospitality received.

A Downing Street spokesperson reiterated the seriousness of the initial judgment and emphasized that no one is above the rules. The spokesperson also stressed the necessity of allowing the ongoing independent process to reach its conclusion.

Former City and FA chairman David Bernstein expressed concern regarding Burnham’s comments, arguing that politicians should refrain from involvement in such matters. Bernstein highlighted the importance of the independent regulator’s autonomy in performing its duties free from political pressure.

On Friday, Manchester City confirmed it has lodged an appeal against the guilty verdict, arguing that the commission’s decision contained “clear material errors” of law, principle, and fact, rendering it unsafe.

The ongoing situation reflects broader concerns about accountability in football governance and the influence of wealth in sports, an area that continues to provoke debate and scrutiny.
