Soft Cell releases their final album ‘Danceteria’ following Dave Ball’s death
On 22 October 2025, Dave Ball, the keyboardist of iconic electro-pop duo Soft Cell, passed away at the age of 66, prompting singer Marc Almond to reflect on their recently completed album. “Two days after we both agreed on the album, someone came in and said: ‘Dave’s just passed away,’” Almond recalled. This tragic event marks the release of Danceteria, which is Soft Cell’s sixth and final album, reports BritPanorama.
Ball’s death followed a protracted battle with health issues caused by a fall in March 2022 that left him with pneumonia and sepsis, resulting in a lengthy coma. Given these circumstances, Almond stated, “I would never do another Soft Cell album without Dave.” The new album, which dropped recently, serves as a poignant farewell to Ball and encapsulates their musical journey.
Musically, Danceteria embodies the pair’s vibrant experiences in New York during the early 1980s, a period that defined their careers and lives. The album taps into their adventures with a dance-pop flair and reflects both the exuberance and the challenges of that era, when Soft Cell emerged as influential figures in UK pop culture.
Soft Cell gained prominence with their groundbreaking 1981 hit “Tainted Love,” a reimagining of Gloria Jones’ 1964 classic. Alongside Almond’s theatrical performances and Ball’s electronic expertise, they tackled themes of nightlife and sexuality, revealing both celebration and the emptiness often hidden beneath the surface. Their debut album, Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, laid bare the complexities of gay life in a repressive society.
Despite their commercial success, the attention proved overwhelming. Almond expressed disdain for the pressures of fame, describing the discomfort of their early mainstream portrayal. “We hated it so much at first… the pressure to conform,” he recalled, highlighting their struggle with the demands of celebrity.
Their outrage at unwanted media attention led to self-sabotage, as they actively sought to distance themselves from the pop-star image they found stifling. Their move to New York provided an escape, a city that Almond described as both exhilarating and overwhelming, teeming with the energy of underground clubs and hidden experiences that inspired their music.
In Danceteria, Almond pays homage to this vibrant yet turbulent period in his lyrics. He describes it as a love letter to the city that transformed both him and the band. Tracks referencing their encounters with notable figures such as Andy Warhol further illustrate this colourful backdrop.
However, the joy of their experiences was overshadowed by the realities of the AIDS crisis, which began to claim lives and reshape the cultural landscape in the 1980s. Almond recalled the chilling atmosphere that descended over the city as familiar venues closed, marking the decline of a vibrant community.
After releasing a sequence of albums in the 1980s, Soft Cell took a hiatus, but reunions in later years allowed them to continue their creative partnership. Although Ball’s death was anticipated due to his declining health, Almond reflects on the bittersweet nature of their final collaboration, noting, “I just feel sad that Dave wouldn’t be around to see it.”
