Israeli footballer sent off for controversial celebration
Israeli footballer Sayed Abu Farchi was shown a red card during a Nations League match against Austria for an apparent celebration mimicking the use of a corner flag as a gun, reports BritPanorama.
The 20-year-old received a second yellow card when he raised the corner flag, placed it on his hand, knelt down, and then raised it over his head. UEFA regulations stipulate that players may be cautioned for “gesturing or acting in a provocative, derisory or inflammatory way,” which appears to have been the basis for his dismissal.
Some reports suggest that Farchi was imitating a snooker shot, noting that he had celebrated a goal in a similar manner previously without any disciplinary action. Israel’s manager, Ran Ben-Shimon, indicated that Farchi typically celebrates this way and has not faced bookings for doing so in the past, stating, “I’ve seen it before, and everyone can check.”
Ben-Shimon defended the player, claiming, “He didn’t know about it, this is his way to celebrate every goal he scores,” while acknowledging that this incident would serve as a lesson for the young player. UEFA confirmed that the red card resulted in a suspension for the next match. The Israeli Football Association has been in the spotlight lately, following a campaign by the Republic of Ireland urging a boycott of matches against them.
In relation to the Iran-Israel situation, Ireland FA chief executive David Courell expressed disappointment at UEFA’s rejection of their appeal not to play Israel, emphasising that “Ireland and Israel have never been in direct conflict.” Ireland’s coach, Heimir Hallgrimsson, voiced concerns about many players’ discomfort with the matchup, echoing sentiments on the broader political context.
