Burnham meets Trump in New York amid diplomatic stakes
During his visit to New York on Monday night, Prime Minister Andy Burnham engaged in his first face-to-face meeting with US President Donald Trump, reflecting a significant diplomatic moment for the UK, reports BritPanorama.
The meeting came as Burnham, who assumed the premiership earlier this summer, expressed hope for establishing “common ground” with the US leader, often perceived as unpredictable. However, upon concluding their 30-minute discussion, Burnham appeared visibly nervous, a stark contrast to Trump, who sat relaxed and at ease.
As Trump spoke to reporters, moments of tension were punctuated by Burnham’s body language, which included tightly clasped hands and raised eyebrows. Nevertheless, he would likely take satisfaction from the impromptu press conference that marked the end of their discussions.
Trump described Burnham as a person he could work with, stating that Britain was “waiting for success… (and) good leadership.” Commenting on the longstanding UK-US relationship, he declared it stronger than “with your last prime minister,” and expressed optimism about Burnham’s future leadership, stating, “I think he’s going to be a great prime minister… we’re with you all the way.”
Despite the overall positive tone, there were some challenging moments. Trump criticized the UK’s agreement with Mauritius over the Chagos Islands, labelling it a “terrible deal” and “ridiculous.” When Trump suggested that Burnham ought to re-evaluate this contentious agreement, the Prime Minister appeared to indicate agreement.
The encounter could have faced more difficult questions, particularly in light of Burnham’s 2021 remarks condemning previous engagement with Trump as shameful. Notably, this aspect was omitted from their discussions, alongside only joking references to Trump’s previous dismissive comments about Manchester, where Burnham had served as mayor.
Interestingly, Trump claimed ignorance about Burnham’s government’s recent sanctions against the West Bank, a policy that has drawn criticism from the US, including Trump’s own ambassador to Israel. Ultimately, Burnham’s performance may reflect an intentional effort by Trump to foster goodwill as he grapples with dwindling support in Europe.
