Helen Jenner appointed new leader of Reform UK in Wales

Helen Jenner has been named the new leader of Reform UK in Wales following the arrest and resignation of Dan Thomas, reports BritPanorama.

Ms. Jenner, a former deputy leader, is a Member of the Senedd representing Bangor Conwy Mon. Her ascent to leadership comes after Thomas announced his stepping down for “personal reasons” linked to allegations of assault and controlling or coercive behaviour.

Thomas, who had been leading Reform UK since February, guided the party to becoming the second-largest group in the Welsh Parliament following the May elections. His resignation was unexpected, especially considering the rapid growth of the party during his tenure.

In his resignation statement, he expressed deep regret over the situation, asserting, “I have done nothing wrong, but I do not want the coming headlines to be a distraction from the fantastic work our Senedd team is doing in holding this government to account.” He emphasized his continued commitment to serving his constituents despite the controversy.

Ms. Jenner, who is a fluent Welsh speaker, was born in Neath and raised on Anglesey. After a decade spent teaching in the North West of England and London, she returned to Anglesey in 2019. Following her appointment as deputy leader in April, she also serves as Shadow Cabinet Minister for Education and the Welsh Language.

Now leading the largest opposition group in the Senedd, her leadership is seen as a pivotal moment for the party, especially at a time of political transition and challenges in Welsh governance.

While Thomas described his past role as “the honour of my life,” he acknowledged that it was untenable for him to maintain leadership amid personal difficulties. Nigel Farage, the party leader, echoed this sentiment, praising Thomas’s contributions while expressing confidence in Jenner’s capability to lead effectively.

“I’ve known Helen for many, many years. She’s a determined campaigner, someone that I trust, and I think’s going to do a very, very good job,” Farage remarked.

The political landscape in Wales remains dynamic as parties adapt to changes in leadership and public expectations, suggesting a period of recalibration ahead for Reform UK.
