Murder trial begins for Abby Choi’s former husband and in-laws
A murder trial commenced this week for the former husband and in-laws of Abby Choi, a Hong Kong socialite, more than three years after the discovery of parts of her dismembered body at a house shocked the Chinese territory, where violent crime is rare, reports BritPanorama.
Choi’s ex-husband Alex Kwong, his father Kwong Kau, and his brother Anthony Kwong face charges of murdering Choi in February 2023. If convicted, they could receive life imprisonment. They are also charged with preventing the lawful burial of a body.
At the time of her death, Choi was a 28-year-old socialite known for showcasing her glamorous lifestyle through photo shoots and fashion shows on Instagram. Just days before the tragedy, she had posted about attending a Dior show during Paris Fashion Week.
The circumstances surrounding Choi’s killing have captivated many in Hong Kong, which typically experiences low rates of violent crime. The trial drew significant attention, with dozens of spectators waiting outside the courtroom, and a live broadcast was made available for those unable to enter.
All three defendants appeared calm in court, wearing masks; Kwong Kau in a white T-shirt, while his sons were dressed in suits. Police reported in 2023 that some body parts were located inside a unit in Tai Po, a suburban district of Hong Kong, after which officers conducted searches in a local landfill for further evidence.
Choi had two children with Alex Kwong and, following their divorce, remarried, having two younger children with her second husband.
The prosecution’s case is set to commence at a later date. This jury trial is anticipated to last around 45 days.
